Mâcon-Chardonnay “Les Combettes” 2019

Mâcon Cruzille

August 19, 2021
Although there is only a path separating Les Combettes from Les Genièvrières, the two terroirs are radically different. Les Combettes is very mineral, with a crispy bite. The wine is often more concentrated than Les Geniévrières, and it needs more time to come into its own. The appellation of Les Combettes is Mâcon Chardonnay (from the name of the village the vineyard is situated in, not the grape variety), and, thanks to the limestone bedrock having collapsed more than in Les Genièvrières, the vineyard is slightly more south facing, and is therefore warmer and the grapes ripen earlier. This, coupled with the low-yielding varieties of Chardonnay planted here, mean that the wines are always a little more rounded than Les Genièvrières.

Wine Advocate (93+ ) -August 19, 2021 "Notes of peach, beeswax, white flowers, yellow orchard fruit and fresh bread preface the 2019 Mâcon-Chardonnay Les Combettes, a medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine that's ample and enveloping,…

Mâcon-Cruzille “Les Geniévrières” 2019

Mâcon Cruzille

August 19, 2021
Abandoned after the phylloxera crisis, this vineyard was cleared and replanted by Emmanuel’s father, Jean-Gérard in 1983. Aiming for quality, he decided to use low-yield rootstock, high planting density, Guyot Simple pruning and, of course, organic methods. This brings about a natural control of yield and optimum maturity. The Bathonian clay and limestone soils give the wine its distinct minerality.

Wine Advocate -August 19, 2021 "The 2019 Mâcon-Cruzille Les Geniévrières is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, lemon oil, dried white flowers and warm bread. Medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy…

Saintes Pierres de Nalys Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

August 11, 2021
Translated as "holy stones", a play on the soils and history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the second red wine to Château de Nalys is an altogether different animal.  Differing varietal and plot selections, fermentation, and aging result in a wine that is rich and ample, yet offers immense direct and approachable pleasure; a wine of red fruits, supple structure and brightness.

James Suckling -September 02, 2022 "Aromas of blackberry, gravel, fresh mint and plum. Medium-bodied with lovely juicy fruit. Silky tannins. A bit smoky but with fresh black fruit and berries. Earthy, but the fruit is…

Champagne Bollinger 33262

Vieilles Vignes Françaises 2008

Champagne, France

July 20, 2021
Vieilles Vignes Françaises is one of Champagne’s most mythical cuvees, produced from miraculously preserved and ungrafted 100% Pinot Noir vines. Phylloxera destroyed the vines of Champagne in the early 20th century, but amazingly enough two of Bollinger’s classified Grands crus plots, Chaudes Terres and Clos St. Jacques, survived and are still grown the traditional way. Madame Lily Bollinger first had this wine produced in 1969 as an anniversary cuvee to commemorate her 70th birthday. Following the wine’s launch in 1974, Vieilles Vignes Françaises promptly became a collectible and a symbol of a bygone era. Over the decades, its uniqueness and scarcity have made it one of the most sought-after and expensive Champagnes.

Vinous -August 12, 2021 "The 2008 Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes Françaises is a total thrill to taste. Bright and finely sculpted, the VVF expresses all of the natural tension of the year in…

James Suckling -July 15, 2021 "Ripe and plummy with a pleasant red-licorice note on the nose. Medium-bodied with a silky, spicy fruit core that pushes and pushes through the long finish, thanks to some citrusy…

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Grand Vin Blanc 2019

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

July 06, 2021
Guigal's mastery of growing and producing white wine varieties in the Rhône Valley is exemplified in this wine of immense breadth and power, elegance and expression.  Intensely aromatic nose of white flowers, citrus and a touch of vanilla, on the palate the presence is undeniably penetrating, with a deep minerality joining the notes above.

James Suckling -September 02, 2022 "I like the nose here with notes of lemongrass, almond skin, freshly cut grass and sliced lemon. Medium-to full-bodied with so much depth and complexity. Beeswax, sage and charred lemon.…

Saintes Pierres de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2019

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

July 06, 2021
The second white wine to the Château de Nalys Grand Vin Blanc has a character all its own, with a strongly different varietal and plot composition, and like its red Saintes Pierres counterpart, a fermentation, and aging geared towards emphasizing freshness. The hallmark seamlessness of Guigal's white wines is especially evident in this wine, which is unlike any Châteauneuf white we have experienced in its grace and lift.

James Suckling (91+) -September 02, 2022 "Aromas of lilies, green apples and elderberries. Medium-bodied. Rather crisp. Fresh and bright with some nice driving acidity. Oyster shell and lemon peel. Restrained. 36% Clairette, 29% Bourbolenc, 25% Grenache…

Wine Advocate (91+) -June 21, 2022 "Drawn mainly from the lieux-dits of Bois Sénéchal and Nalys, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Saintes Pierres Blanc is a crisp, focused, almost Burgundian-styled white, with a healthy dose of…

Le Vigne Barolo 2017

Barolo

June 17, 2021
Le Vigne is a wine created from four different Nebbiolo vineyards, each of which brings its own contribution. This union generates an exceptionally complex wine that is round and harmonious on the palate, with fruity and spicy notes, and this approach of blending together plots is in fact the traditional one in Barolo.

Wine & Spirits -December 13, 2021 According to Luca Sandrone, his key to success in the hot and dry 2017 vintage was resisting the temptation to pick too early, before the grapes reached optimal phenolic ripeness.…

Marietta Cellars 31641

Román Zinfandel 2019

North Coast, California

June 08, 2021
Named after cellarmaster Román Cisneros who has worked at Marietta for over 32 years, this Estate Zinfandel is from the Angeli estate vineyard in Alexander Valley and the McDowell Valley estate vineyard. One of the grape varieteies that Marietta is famous for, this wine captures the bright, juicy character of Zinfandel, and hearkens to an era before dark, thick and oaky styles of Zinfandel took hold. The Virgin of Guadalupe on the label is a nod to Roman's dedication, selflessness, and sacrifice, both for the Bilbro family and his own. It is also a nod to the Mexican-American heritage of Roman and many of Marietta's crew members. Marietta's family series is an ode to the elements that have unified the family's winemakers over time: family, hard work, passion, and a love for the creative process that is winemaking.

James Suckling -July 20, 2021 "A juicy, fruity red with blackberry, plum and chocolate character. Medium-to full-bodied with round, integrated tannins and a juicy finish. Some slate and earth to the fruit in the aftertaste."…

Angeli Zinfandel 2019

Alexander Valley, California

July 14, 2021
Once a component of the Angeli Cuvée, this Zinfandel long stood out for its brilliance, clarity, and leanness. Now, showcased on its own, it speaks volumes about this unique little canyon off Alexander Valley known as Angeli Ranch. The halo-like image on the label pays homage to Viola Angeli, who sold the Angeli Ranch to Chris Bilbro in an angelic act that mirrors her name. The estate series from Marietta is made with terroir in mind above all else. For many years these sites were included in blends, though they routinely stood out as extraordinary. These wines are true expressions of unique sites, crafted with freshness, tension and longevity in mind.

Game Trail Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Yorkville Highlands, California

June 08, 2021
The Yorkville Highlands are the mountain pass between the north end of Alexander Valley and the west end of Anderson Valley. From a high elevation site with coastal influence and large diurnal shifts, the Game Trail Cabernet offers an intense, fragrant, savory, and fresh style of Cabernet that speaks of site and demands to be paired with food. This area, with trails worn by mushroom hunters and wild game that travel through the woods, was a refuge for Chris Bilbro, who hunted here and searched for Chanterelles. The mushroom on the label is a tribute to this unique place and its significance. The estate series from Marietta is made with terroir in mind above all else. For many years these sites were included in blends, though they routinely stood out as extraordinary. These wines are true expressions of unique sites, crafted with freshness, tension and longevity in mind.

Gibson Block Syrah 2018

McDowell Valley, California

June 08, 2021
Made from the oldest Syrah vines in California, in the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA, this wine reflects the hidden property where it is grown - quiet, obscure and profound. This ancient, dry farmed, mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. Limited in production due to the unique grape source, this wine is built to enjoy with food. The estate series from Marietta is made with terroir in mind above all else. For many years these sites were included in blends, though they routinely stood out as extraordinary. These wines are true expressions of unique sites, crafted with freshness, tension and longevity in mind.

James Suckling -July 20, 2021 "Blackberry, black-licorice and tar aromas follow through to a full body with round, soft tannins that are reserved and focused. Fresh finish. Rich and spicy at the end with a…

Wine Advocate -June 08, 2021 "The 2018 Gibson Block Syrah comes from very old vines interplanted with other varieties like Grenache, Trousseau Noir and Mission. They are dry-farmed, picked together and co-fermented. It has a…

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Magis 2019

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

June 03, 2021
Another unsurprising but jawdropping discovery when encountering the Saouma wines: Magis, Mounir’s white Chateauneuf from the heavily limestone Pierredon vineyard in Bedarrides. It makes sense that a producer of great white Burgundy would quickly become enchanted by the possibilities here. Only 3% of Chateauneuf is white, and virtually all of it is bottled after 6 months. Mounir’s chateauneuf is aged 18-24 months and has already been compared to some of the great white Burgundy crus for its depth and minerality.

Vinous -September 08, 2022 "A perfumed nose of flint, gunpowder, wet stone, baked lemons, pears and apple skin. Full-bodied with so much nuance and depth. Layered and effortlessly balanced. This really commands your attention…

Wine Spectator -May 03, 2022 “A stunner, with a seductive mouthfeel as both creamed and dried yellow apple, yellow plum and white peach flavors hold center stage, backed by a range of shortbread, macadamia nut…

Wine Spectator -June 03, 2021 "A beauty in all aspects, from the lush and fine-grained feel, to the wide swath of melon, peach, pear, yellow plum and yellow apple fruit flavors, to the subtle brioche,…

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo 2020

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC

May 06, 2021
Perhaps the finest rosé production area in Italy, and one of the few appellations dedicated only to rosé, Cerasuolo has a long history of producing serious rosé, and showcasing how well the Montepulciano grape is adapted to rosé. Masciarelli first produced this wine in 1986, only 5 years after the winery was founded. With deep fruit and structure but no shortage of pleasure, it is a rosé you can take to the dinner table.

Vinous -June 09, 2021 "The wickedly fresh 2020 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Villa Gemma leads with dusty red florals, dried strawberries and sweet white smoke. It fills the palate with fleshy textures contrasted by zesty acids…
